Sonoria

A medieval-fantasy music-learning game prototype.

Game Concept

Sonoria is a medieval-fantasy music-learning game in which players develop their musical skills through progressively structured challenges. The player takes on the role of an apprentice wizard learning musical magic through lessons, challenges, and exploration. The prototype was created in approximately two and a half months as part of my coursework at TMU. I was responsible for all aspects of the project, including game design, programming, sound design, and overall creative direction.

Melodic Dictation

The Melodic Dictation module was the main focus of the prototype. It is an ear-training module in which players listen to short melodies and attempt to play them back using a virtual or MIDI keyboard. Melodies are algorithmically generated, meaning that no two playthroughs are identical.

Progression and Feedback

Exercises are organized into a sequence so that the player gradually encounters increasingly demanding melodic material. As the player progresses, new scales are unlocked, and melodies become longer and more complex.

Ear Training in a First-Person Perspective

In addition to the Melodic Dictation module, Sonoria also explored a more experimental ear-training game framed as a first-person shooter. In this module, approaching enemies can only be destroyed by correctly identifying musical intervals.
